2010 word starter will not shut down

Unfortunately my computer came with the ad infused office 2010 set.
Although it seemed it would be handy it has become quite the pain.
I have searched around and can not figure out what to do.
I am a novice at computers (at best).
The problem is every time
I try to access any document, my computer gets stuck "processing" access to the word program.
The box will not cancel when I select to do so.
It will not close.
It just sits there doing nothing but "processing".
Please tell me how to make this thing stop.
I can not log off because it is supposedly running.
