How Can I Fix - 144MB Excel file will not open?

144MB Excel file will not open

I am using Excel 2007 on XP.  I have a large Excel file (144MB) that will not open.  The file contains Pivot Tables and macros that perform calculations on a temp sheet.  The data is cleared when i close the file normally and the file size stays around 30MB.
Once in a while I will process a large amount of data that will temporarily increase the file size to ~140MB.  When I attempt to close the file I sometimes get the "cannot perform with available resources" message and am unable to clear out the data before
closing.  When this happens the file size gets stuck at the 140MB instead of clearing out the data and reducing the size.  I am then unable to open the file.  I learned the hard way and started setting backups for my files but it is still frustrating to lose
changes.  When I attempt to open the file I watch the task manager to see the memory resources that Excel is using.  It seems that Excel hits a limit and then gives up trying and will try to recover.  I have read on other sites that Excel has a 2GB memory
ceiling.  Is this true?  I also read other responses that recommend reduces the resources used by other programs.  I have tried clearing out my startup programs using MSCONFIG, have defragged, have tried repair and open, have closed all other programs but
nothing seems to work.  Is there a trick to getting large files to open or to slow down the resources that Excel uses to allow it time to open the file?  Is there another way to open the file so I can clear out the data manually and then resave?
Thanks

I can understand the problem you're facing.
Let me try to answer your question in 2 steps:

1) Recovering current file
- Try closing all application that aren't needed at all

- Open excel in safe mode
   Start > Run > Type > Excel /s
Try opening the 144 mb file

- Avoid running any macros on start up, if macros are enabled by default disable first
Office button > Excel Options > Trust Center > Trust center settings > Macro settings > Disable all macros with notification

- Clear data in parts and keep saving file in between

If the file doesn't open try opening on a PC which are bigger RAM and Hard disk (colleagues/friends pc/laptop?)

2) Future Maintenance
First avoid writing temp information in same file itself.
You can write temp information in external file (excel or a text file) and then delete it after use. This will avoid problem relating to original file getting disturbed.

Secondly I am not sure about the logic going around in your file but if you can think of ways to write minimum temp information, write in parts/phases, etc.
then it will avoid much of the hassles.

Excel tries to use maximum available memory, once it reaches the system limit or its own limit, it hangs or stops.
Lot of times memory is used for UNDO purpose, if you close and reopen file the memory usage will be reduced as UNDO information is deleted.

So the trick is to make your program efficient and build the system which is thought around excel limitations.

I sometimes use applications like MSDos, Textpad, etc.
for memory eating processes where excel won't be efficient, you may explore such option as well.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair corrupted or missing system files:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Type cmd, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to open the elevated command prompt (I.e. Command prompt with administrative rights).
  3. The User Account Control window should appear, be sure that the action it exhibits is correct, and then press the Continue button.
  4. Type or copy paste the below command line into it without quotes:
  5. "Sfc /scannow"
