Troubleshooter of Error: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 runs multiple instances of explorer.exe

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 runs multiple instances of explorer.exe

Hi,

I just bought an Acer Ferrari One with a 3GB RAM, 500GB Hard Disk Configuration and Windows 7 Home Premium x64 pre-installed.  I just noticed that every time I open a new window, e.g.
"computer", "documents", "pictures", a new instance of explorer.exe appears
in the task manager.  I know that the normal configuration of explorer.exe in a Windows 7 x86 is  to run the said application at only one instance.  So, is this how explorer.exe works in a x64 system?  Can I make explorer.exe only run at one instance? Multiple
instances of this application really consumes a lot of memory.
Please help.  Thank you.

Hi strike91,
Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum.
I would suggest you to run online virus scan to see if any virus is causing the problem,
Both 32 bit and 64 bit has the same base for its design.
No matter how many explorer windows you have opened, it should show only one instance of explorer.exe in task manager, the following link will help you to run online virus
scan.
