Windows 7 freezes after displaying flash screen

The splash screen is as far as it will boot from a cold start.  Sometimes, I can get the machine to boot by a power down, then power up, and choosing "Start Windows in normal mode".
This is a huge time waster for me and I'd really like to get this fixed.  This machine was upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista and I've had this problem ever since.  I never had any issues when Vista was installed.

I suggest that you run a Startup Repair on your computer using a Windows 7 installation disc.
Follow the below steps to run Startup repair:
a.     Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the DVD drive, and then restart your computer from the DVD.
Note: when you receive the prompt Press any Key to boot from the CD or DVD, press any key on the keyboard to restart your computer by using the Windows 7 DVD.
b.     Select your language setting, and then click Next.
c.      Select Repair your computer.
d.     Select the Windows 7 installation to be repaired, and then click Next.
e.     Under System Recovery Options, select Startup Repair, and then press ENTER.
Note: If the repair process detects a problem when it starts Windows Vista, it will run Startup Repair to automatically fix the problems.
If this occurs, click Cancel, and then click View Advanced Options for system
recovery and support.
f.       Click Finish when the Startup Repair has finished.
g.     Under System Recovery Options, click Restart.

How to Fix Windows 7 freezes after displaying flash screen with SmartPCFixer?

1. Download SmartPCFixer . Install it on your system.  Click Scan, and it will perform a scan for your computer. The errors will be shown in the scan result.

2. After the scan is finished, you can see the errors and problems need to be repaired. Click Fix All.
