Windows 7 (new installation, 32-bit) seems to sleep/hibernate on my desktop computer after 2-6 minutes even though all Sleep/Power Settings are set to 'Never'
The following settings are how I have my new, 32-bit Windows 7 installation configured. The computer seems to sleep/hibernate for no reason after 2 to 6 minutes of inactivity based on several tests I performed.
Using Balanded power plan.
Settings have been saved as follows:
-Turn off the display: Never
-Put the comptuer to sleep: Never
Advanced Power settings (for Balanced, High performance, and Power saver options)
-Sleep
-Sleep after: Never
-Allow hybrid sleep: Off
-Hibernate after: Never
-Allow wake timers: Enable
-Hard disk: 120 minutes
-Display: Never

Update: my system now no longer freezes either. But it still returns to the logon screen all by itself after 10 minutes or so of inactivity, even though all power mgt is disabled, and screensaver is set to "none". This is in Windows
7, and did not happen when we had Vista on the machine.
Regarding the freezing behavior that used to happen, on my system I found that on one of our 4 users, the 'application data' folder was missing the security entry to Deny Everyone permission to “List folder / read data”. As a result it seems that
we had some kind of recursive/infinate loop going on, e.g.
in a search a single file came up 17 times, with paths such as:
C:\Users\Barry\AppData\Local
\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\HZTG9H19\ykb_popupWindow[1].js
I added the Deny entry to the security table to match the other users, and the computer doesn't freeze any more.
UPDATE: This was a problem, but the PC still froze after inactivity. See below.
Manually editing the Windows registry
Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!
Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (eg. Windows Operating System):
- Click the Start button.
- Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
- While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
- You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
- Click Yes.
- A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
- Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
- In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
- From the File menu, choose Export.
- In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
- In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
- In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
- Click Save.
- The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
- You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
