After installing Vista SP2 my laptop is always "configuring updates" when it shuts down and starts
After successfully
installing Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) KB948465, I am experiencing the following PROBLEM with my SONY Vaio Notebook:
1) When I shut down my computer I always get the message that says
“configuring updates 2of 3, please do not shut down your computer” and it counts to 100% and then shuts down after about 5 minutes.
2) When I start the pc again I get the message that says
“configuring updates 3of 3, please do not shut down your computer” and it counts to 100% and then starts normally again after about 5 minutes.
This is happening all the time since I installed Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and it is very annoying and time consuming.
Can you please tell me how to resolve this issue?
(Please note that I have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed, but I had it shut down when I did the SP2 update)

Thank you for Posting on the Microsoft Vista Community Forums.
Try to boot the computer in safe mode and verify if the installation completes.
To boot in safe mode restart the computer and keep tapping F8 key.
Once you see the safe mode option select it and press enter.
If you are unable to boot in safe mode, you may try a startup repair once again on your computer and verify if it help.
To perform a Startup Repair follow the steps below:
1.
Please insert the Windows Vista DVD and reboot the computer.
2.
When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar.
3.
Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
4.
Click Repair your computer.
5.

6.
On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair.

If the above steps do not work, uninstall Windows Vista service pack from a Command Prompt
Note: If you have used the Disk Cleanup Wizard, it may have removed some temporary installation files which are needed to uninstall the Windows Vista service pack.
If this is the case, this method may not work for you and you should go to method 2.
This section is intended for advanced users.
Use this method if you are running the prerelease version of a Windows Vista service pack, or if you cannot see the uninstall option for a Windows Vista service pack listed in the Program and Features window.
If you cannot see the uninstall option for the Windows Vista service pack, you may still be able to uninstall the service pack at a command prompt.
To do this, follow these steps:
1.
Open an elevated Command Prompt window.
To do this, click Start, type command in the Start Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
2. Run the following command, as appropriate for the version of the Windows Vista service that you want to uninstall: • For Windows Vista Service Pack 1: C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.exe /x:C:\temp
Note: This command assumes that the Windows6.0-KB936330.exe folder is in the C:\Temp folder
• For Windows Vista Service Pack 2:
C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB948465- NNN .exe /x:C:\temp
In this command, NNN represents x86, x64, or IA-64.
Note: This command assumes that the Windows6.0-KB948465-X86.exe folder is in the C:\Temp folder.
3. You have to create a sandbox environment before you can continue to step 4.
This helps you safely run an untrusted program.
To create a sandbox, type md sandbox.
4. To remove the Windows Vista service pack, type, or copy and paste the following command, as appropriate for the version of the Windows Vista service that you want to uninstall:: • For Windows Vista Service Pack 1
start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.cab /up /s:sandbox
• For Windows Vista Service Pack 2
start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB948465-NNN.cab /up /s:sandbox.
In this command, NNN represents x86, x64, or IA-64.
5. After Pkgmgr.exe finishes, you are prompted to restart the computer to complete the uninstall process.
If these steps successfully uninstall the Windows Vista service pack, and this resolves the issue, you are finished.
If the above step does not help, you may have to try to unplug all the external devices except keyboard and mouse and try to boot to the desktop.
If the issue persists you may have to backup all the data on your computer and later reinstall Windows Vista.
Hope it helps.
Thanks and Regards,
