the ie8 "read email" icon does not open Outlook

I just downloaded IE8.
The "read email" icon on the toolbar tries to get me to create an email account with msn.
I already have an email account, and use Outlook to manage my email.
Outlook was, and remains the default email program in the internet options.

I am using Windows XP.

Are you using the MSN toolbar?  This will sometimes redirect email link to MSN. 
If you have the MSN toolbar loaded try disabling it and check if email links open Outlook.
