Black screen after welcome message and system shutting down automatically after few mins

Hi,
I am having ACER Aspire with pre loaded Vista Home premium service pack 2.
All of a sudden on starting the system, I started getting the black screen after the welcome message.
I searched over the forum and internet and tried possible solutions apart from re-installing OS but no success.
Only CTRL + ALT + DEL is working, it takes me to the screen to select task manager.
On selecting task manager option, it takes me back to the black screen.
Since it is a preloaded Vista OS, I tried using the sytem restore / repair option but no success.
I can log into SAFE mode but the 2nd problem I face is the system shuts down automatically.
I modified the settings in system restore under system setup - removed the check box on automatic shut down on system failure but this doesn't help.
Kindly suggest a solution for the above issues.

Step 1: Remove the media in your CD, DVD, or floppy drive and all the devices with are connected externally and then restart the computer.
Step 2: Disable the video adapter after from safe mode.
To disable the Video Adapter driver, follow these steps:
a.    Start the computer in safe mode.
Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator
rights.
When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of your monitor.
b.    Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clickingControl Panel, clicking System and Security, and then, under System,
clicking Device Manager.
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
c.     In the list of hardware categories, expand the Display adapters category.
Make a note of your display adapter.
d.     Right-click your display adapter, and then click Disable.
When prompted for confirmation, click Yes.
e.    Close all open windows and restart your computer normally.
     If you can see your desktop in the normal mode, there's a problem with your video adapter.
If that’s the case try updating your video adapter driver to the latest by visiting the manufacturer’s website.

Step 3: If not run an online virus scan.
You can do a virus scan by clicking on the link  http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm and Clicking
on the Full Service scan and accept the Agreement.

1. Access the files on your computer via MY COMPUTER
2. Under the C: drive, access the WINDOWS folder
3. Select the SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION folder, followed by the DOWNLOAD folder.
4. Delete any files within this download folder.
5. If you are unable to delete these files, open the command prompt (CMD) as the administrator, and type "net stop wuauserv" into the CMD prompt window. Press ENTER. This should allow you to delete the files from step 4.
6. Once the files are deleted, open and run the CMD as the administrator and type "wuauclt.exe /updatenow". Press ENTER.
