Back to and restore from image if I have a single drive with 2 paritions

I am trying to set up Windows Backup and Restore to save a system image that can be later restored in case of system failure such as virus infection.    In the past, I have 2 hard drives and the image was saved on the non-system drive.  When I restore
from image, the first hard drive has all its partition deleted.  This would imply the image must be saved on non-system hard drive.  If I only have one hard drive, is it possible to do this with 2 partitions (save the image on the non-system partition and
restore from it later)?

My quick search seems to suggest that maybe the image I created had other partitions that cause the restore to delete all other partition.   When I create the image, I only chose C: system drive.  How can I check if the image has other partition?

Thanks
